Just How Small is a Micron Anyway?

Looking in a microscope

We’ve been talking a lot about our new air purifiers this month. You’ve probably seen in the description that they both feature a HEPA filter that is “designed remove over 99% of tiny particles down to 0.3 microns.” This got us thinking – just how small is 0.3 microns?

A micron, more formally known as a micrometer, is a unit a measure that refers to 1×10-6 of a meter, or one-millionth of a meter. In inches, one micron is equal to 0.000039 inches. To put it another way, there are 25,400 microns in one inch. So, based on the conversion rate, 0.3 microns would equal 0.0000117 inches.

Let’s put that in perspective. Here are a few common items with their
measurements listed in microns:

  • 1-inch stamp: 25,400 microns
  • Eye of a needle: 1,230 microns
  • Particle of sand from the beach: between 100-2,000 microns
  • Pollen: anywhere from 10-1,000 microns

We can’t even fathom just how small 0.3 microns is, so to make it easy we’re just say incredibly small.

Dreaming of Summer – and Misting Fans!

Tennis 2013 - Australian Open - Day 4

Looks cool doesn’t it?

While most of the US is in the middle of winter, down in Australia, it’s the middle of another beautiful summer. With the Australian Open Tennis Championship under way this week, many tennis fans will be spending long days out in the hot sun. Luckily, the folks at the Autstralian Open are well prepared with our favorite type of cooling solution – Misting Fans!

And while no, they’re not using the awesome Luma Comfort misting fans down under, they very well could be! In particular, the MF26B Commercial Misting Fan would be a perfect choice for cooling off large crowds, thanks to its 1,000 square feet of cooling power.

So while you’re walking through the cold at some point this month, just remember the above photo, and know that’re only a couple months away from Misting Fan Season!

Are Luma Comfort Air Purifiers Good for Dogs (& their Owners)?

Why don’t you see for yourself 😉

Tucker the dog enjoys his Luma Comfort Air Purifier

Our unofficial mascot, Tucker, with his Luma Comfort AP170W Air Purifier

Any pet lover can tell you that one downside of having a furry friend is pet dander. Caused by shedding of fur or even simple skin cells, dander of any kind can and often will cause and aggravate allergies. These particles are microscopic, so even though you can’t see it, pet dander will really affect air quality in the home. Enter the air purifier!

Air purifiers, particularly those with HEPA filters, have been proven to capture airborne particles – like pet dander. This leaves pet owners with asthma or allergies able to breathe freely. Luma Comfort PureClean Air Purifiers, including the AP170W unit that Tucker is enjoying above, feature an advanced HEPA filter that can trap particles as small as 0.3 microns (trust us, that’s really tiny).

In addition to pet dander, these air purifiers also feature a carbon filter designed specifically to filter the worst odors from the air. Again, an important feature for any pet owner.

So there’s your answer, right Tucker?

Introducing our New PureClean Air Purifiers!

Say hello to the next generation in air cleaning!

Luma Comfort PureClean Air Purifiers

The new Luma Comfort PureClean Air Purifiers

We are very proud to announce the launch of our brand new air purifiers – the AP170W PureClean Air Purifier, and the AP400W PureClean Max Air Purifier. Both units use a revolutionary 5-stage air purification and cleaning process to battle the toughest air pollutants. This includes dust, pollen, mold and bacteria, as well as harmful gases and odors. Just in time for allergy season!

Here’s a quick overview of our new PureClean process, found only in Luma Comfor Air Purifiers:

  1. A carbon filter neutralizes odors and traps larger particles, like pet dander, dust and pollen
  2. The HEPA filter removes more than 99% of particles, down the smallest of small (0.3 microns, if you’re so inclined)
  3. A VOC filter absorbs harmful, you guessed it, VOCs. VOC stands for volatile organic compounds, which are carbon-based airborne particles
  4. The TiO2 filter, coated with titanium dioxide, which eliminates gases and bacteria when combined with stage 5:
  5. A UV bulb, which kills biological contaminants like bacteria and viruses, and works in concert with the TiO2 filter
