There’s Just Nothing Sexy About Humidifiers

humidifier buying guideIt’s true, sadly.  There’s nothing sexy about humidifiers. You’re not likely to boast about your streamlined ultrasonic humidifier like it’s a BMW or a new iPhone 5, but it’s probably a more important purchase than either of those.  So when you think of the great conversations of your life, more than likely it won’t be the debate between a warm air and a cool air humidifier, you should spend some time on it.  Without knowing the differences between the various models and options, you might as well toss money down the metaphorical drain.  You may end up choosing the option that absolutely doesn’t meet your needs, wasting money and time and definitely creating a frustrating situation.

Instead of allowing you to make that mistake, we’ll help you discover which option best suits your needs so that you can invest wisely.

Do You Need a Humidifier?

How do you know if you even need a humidifier? Most people wait until cold or flu symptoms have them coughing to consider a humidifier, but other scenarios may make the regular use of a humidifier a positive change for your home.  Think about whether or not the following scenarios fit your home or family:

  • You are frequently “shocked” by static electricity when you touch surfaces.
  • The rooms you are in seem colder than they should, based on your thermostat setting.
  • Your nasal passages and throat seem oddly dry.
  • You or your family members suffer from cracked lips, bloody noses, or excessively dry skin.
  • You’d like to keep cold and flu viruses from spreading as quickly.
  • Someone is coughing at night, leading to less sleep and more illness.
  • You’re frequently running the heater during the winter or air conditioner during the summer.

If you’ve found yourself nodding to one or more of these, then a humidifier may be an inexpensive solution so some pretty obnoxious problems.

Which Humidifier Is Best for You?

A humidifier is a humidifier is a humidifier, right?  Well, yes and no.  They all work basically the same way—a reservoir of water is turned into a fine mist to compensate for a lack of humidity in the room. Depending on your circumstances and the purpose for the purchase, one type of model may be better than another.

Types of Humidifiers

Standard, Ultrasonic, Impeller, UV Germ Free—Oh My!

humidifier buying guide

With a sea of options before you, how do you choose the “right” humidifier? Ultimately, you’ll choose the one that works best for you.

A standard humidifier uses a fan to blow water through a wicking filter, which propels a fine mist into the room.  These are the cheapest options, though they may not be the easiest to use (you may need to take them apart to refill, etc.).  You’ll likely find a wide variety of designs, including some that are adorably animal shaped, to suit your décor.

If you’re looking for quiet above all, an ultrasonic humidifier may be the best bet.  It’s quieter than most any other model, almost so quiet that you may not even realize that it’s on.  Rather than using a fan, this type of humidifier uses ultrasonic sound waves to vibrate a metal diaphragm, which breaks the water down into a fine mist.

Impeller humidifiers use a spinning disk to spin water toward a diffuser, which breaks the water down into the fine droplets that are dispersed as a fine mist.  These types do not require any filter replacement but can, as a result, be more prone to leave a mineral deposit residue on furniture (which usually looks like a white film) if the water contains any mineral properties at all.

UV Germ Free humidifiers use an ultraviolet light to kill 99% of germs and bacteria present in the water, something that may be attractive to people with compromised immune systems or the parents of young children.  This technology is available on many warm mist humidifiers and, only recently, some cool mist models as well.

Cool or Warm Mist Humidifier?

Warm mist humidifiers may be very attractive for those who suffer with winter issues, like dry skin and nasal passages, simply because it will more quickly warm up a room rather than contribute to the chill.  As an added bonus, these models are often quieter than the fans of the cool mist humidifiers.

However, because the warm mist humidifier boils the water inside the unit and emits the steam, they can be dangerous.  The American Academy of Pediatrics does not recommend their use for children, simply because if children accidentally touch the steam or the unit is tipped, they can be burned by the water.  The machine itself, with the heating element inside, also gets quite warm. For adults who know to be cautious, the warm mist humidifier can be a much better and more comfortable solution for winter usage.

Cool mist humidifiers are recommended for homes with small children or pets.

The cool mist humidifier is probably the most popular and safest of the models, simply because it does not pose any risk other than a minor water spill if knocked over and the mist is harmless to children and pets.  It can be used regardless of season (nobody wants boiling water during the spring and summer, when allergies may require the use of a humidifier) and can double as a white noise machine for those who need them (perfect for babies and young children).

A Word of Caution: Using Humidifiers Properly

No solution is a good solution if it is not maintained properly.  Humidifiers, especially, need more careful attention because of its use of standing water. Warm, moist environments can become a danger rather than a help, but only if you do not pay attention to and follow manufacturer’s recommendations.

These recommendations usually involve using distilled or demineralized water rather than tap water, frequently replacing the water in the reservoir, wiping down the interior parts, and cleaning regularly with a hydrogen peroxide solution. These steps are simple and straightforward, ensuring that the positive benefits that you receive from your humidifier are the only things you get from them.

If you’re concerned about oversaturating the air, look for a model with a humidistat, or a built-in sensor that measures the humidity of a room.  These models will turn off when they reach a set humidity level, ensuring that you do not develop condensation on windows, furniture, and fabrics (or create a mold-loving environment.)

My Man Pad Smells Like Socks

One of the worst things you can have in your home is foul odor. What makes it even more difficult to deal with is the fact that foul odors are next to impossible to remove. But with the right guidance and equipment, you can ensure that you have a fresh smelling home.

How to Get Rid Of Foul Odors At Home

My Man Pad Smells Like Socks

There are many types of foul odors at home. At times, the odor is merely because the home isn’t cleaned thoroughly. If your bachelor pad smells, there could be some cleaning that was missed along the way. Even if they make the utmost effort to clean their home, they may still miss a few spots. In such a case, there are only two options for those single men out there.

  •  Hire a Cleaning Service

Hiring a cleaning service is one of the best options. Cleaning services are fully aware of common places that are left out of most cleaning routines. Moreover, they bring their own specialized equipment for cleaning the home. Without a doubt, a cleaning service professional can make a huge difference when it comes to home cleaning. However, they are quite expensive. Low-end cleaning services can charge between $8 an hour and $100 for two weeks. High-end cleaning services charge more. A good cleaning service may cost more than $40 per visit. This is why hiring a cleaning service is not always convenient.

  • Purchase a Quality Air Purifier

The second and perhaps the best option for single guys is to buy an air purifier. You can clean the home to the best of your abilities and purchase an air purifier to go along with it. Any foul odors that you may have missed will be eliminated. In addition, you will be able to improve the quality of air in your home. In some cases, the cause of a foul odor at home is simply insufficient ventilation. Once that problem is eliminated through an air purifier, you will have a fresh smelling bachelor’s pad.

Top Causes for Odor At Home & Possible Treatments

There are many causes for odors at home. At times the issue is simply a choked drain or can be as severe as foul smoke smell trapped in the carpets. Either way there are treatments to eliminate these odors. Some of these treatment methods will cost you a hefty amount. But it is better to get rid of the smell sooner rather than later. If you wait to get the issue resolved, the odor and the problem could possibly worsen.

1.     Sewer Vents on the Rooftop

Sewer pipes require vents for the sewage to flow freely. Sometimes the vent pipes are placed on the roof. This is what causes the foul smell in the home, but only if the vent pipe is short. When the odor exits the pipe, it gets caught in the draft and can make its way into your home. To cure this issue, you can either call a plumber or extend the vent pipe’s length yourself.

First and foremost, you will need to get on the roof and determine the diameter of the pipe. Once you have that, you can go to a hardware store and acquire a similar pipe but with a larger diameter. This pipe can simply be slipped on top of the already installed vent pipe. Just make sure it’s a snug fit so it does not come off.

2.     Water Heater Anode Rod

In many cases, the foul odor is because the anode rod in a water heater is shot. It is quite common for the anode rod to be shot but it is an easy fix. However, if you don’t repair it, it will result in a foul odor in the water. The worst part is that this odor travels to other parts of your home.

3.     Mold Inside Walls

Mold within the walls and in the basement is not only the cause of foul odor, but also results in various health issues. If you have tried everything else but the smell won’t go away, it is best to hire a mold inspector and have it removed. If left untreated, it can spread to other parts of your home and the treatment cost will increase.

4.     Small Decaying Animals

Mice and other pests can often make their way into your home or behind walls. If they cannot get out they may die in there. Once the dead animal begins decaying, it fills your entire home with a foul odor. The best way to deal with this scenario is to call an exterminator. They are experts at locating dead animals and removing them, even from behind walls.

My Man Pad Smells Like SocksHow Can You Eliminate Certain Odors Yourself

There are many things you can do to eliminate the odors yourself. You may require professional assistance if the problem is too extensive. However, it is always a good idea to give it a shot and possibly save money on hiring a professional.

Install an Exhaust in your Kitchen

The most common culprit of foul odors in a home is the kitchen. When you cook food, the oil evaporates and sticks to various parts in the form of grease. It then begins stinking. The best way to eliminate this odor is to install an exhaust system in your kitchen. The exhaust system will prevent the evaporated grease from staying in your kitchen.

Clean Your Garbage Disposal

Garbage disposals are convenient but they begin stinking after a while. This is because of the food items that are thrown down into it. The waste that you throw down the garbage disposal often sticks to the walls causing a foul odor to build up. The best way to get rid of this odor is to throw a few slices of lemon down the disposal. The citrus in lemons eliminates the odor by dissolving the grease buildup inside.

Eliminate Odors in Rooms

Another excellent method of eliminating odors in rooms is to leave a bowl of vinegar in it. Ideally you should leave it for 24 hours. But if you smoke at home you should consider leaving a bowl of vinegar out every day. You will be surprised at how effectively vinegar eliminates odors.

Air Purifiers You Should Consider Buying

A sure shot way to eliminate odors at home is to invest in an air purifier. Not only will it eliminate odors, but it will also improve the quality of air in your home, making it healthier for you. You should purchase an air purifier with a good range and an advanced filter system. One of the best air purifiers on the market is the Luma Comfort AP170W air purifier. Let’s look at the features that this fabulous air purifier offers:

  • My Man Pad Smells Like Socks

    Luma Comfort AP170W Air Purifier

The Luma Comfort AP170W has a range of 170 square feet. This guarantees that
you will get pure air in any room in your home.

  • There are four filters in the Luma Comfort AP170W which ensure excellent air quality and odor elimination. The first pre-filter is made from carbon, the second one is a HEPA filter, after the HEPA filter the VOC filter takes over and finally there is a TiO2 filter. There is also a UV light to kill airborne bacteria and germs

There are certain types of odors that can be difficult to remove and it is essential that you take action immediately. The sooner you begin working to eliminate the odor, the better your chances are of getting rid of it, even if your man pad smells like socks.

Modern Style Meets Real Life

Modern Design Meets Real LifeSometime, in the middle of all of those Pinterest daydream sessions, reality smacks you in the design face.  I’m as in love with easy breezy modern décor as the next gal, but it’s sometimes a challenge to merge all of those clean lines and chevron prints with something like, say, most appliances. Even something as simple as an alarm clock can become a design puzzle.

Can you really create a cohesive, beautiful room on a budget and while living a normal life? Because, in the middle of normal life are things like toy boxes and piles of bills and Wi-Fi routers and a whole host of other things that just aren’t ever showcased in a staged, designed room.

I’m here to tell you—you absolutely can! Choosing the right appliances and using a few tricks can turn your ordinary, boring room into something that reflects your unique sense of style and makes guests feel welcome.

Are You On Trend? Do You Care?

If you hang out on Pinterest at all, or watch all of those HGTV design shows, you know that the trends right now merge the clean lines of modern design with bold colors.  Pantone’s 2014 color of the year is called “Radiant Orchid”—and if that doesn’t tell you most of what you need to know about the trend toward bold but organic colors, I’m just not sure what will.   (Though, you know, if you don’t want to paint your house purple, we won’t judge you.)Modern Design Meets Real Life

But bold isn’t necessarily the only trend.  Though Elle Décor predicts that 2014 will bring a focus on another bold color—turquoise—as well as hides, with fur rugs and leather upholstery becoming more and more popular. House Beautiful, in its poll of designers about 2014 design trend, found perhaps a more realistic view of home design.  Arianna Vargas suggested that a “versatile neutral base” would be the canvas for homeowners and designers to use big impact accent pieces that were interchangeable.  Designer Lindsay Souza suggested that, in our short attention-span culture, a return to tradition in the form of vintage or one-of-a-kind pieces would be the way homeowners would choose to interpret this year’s design trends.

This Year’s Biggest Trend: One-of-a-Kind or Vintage Pieces

Maybe you don’t care about what designers say this year will focus on—and more power to you! The most important thing in your home is for it to reflect your personality and to be comfortable and welcoming to you and your family.

Making YOUR Design Statement Without Sacrificing Practicality

For those of us not able or willing to hire a designer to help us achieve the look we want, we have to figure out how to merge all of the necessities of daily life with our design desires.  Whether your style veers more toward the modern or the shabby chic cottage look, you’ll have to figure out how to include all of the random details—clocks and remotes and flat screens and things that don’t seem to be designed to fit into any streamlined design plan.  The frustration can be overwhelming if you let it—but don’t! Companies are finally taking notice and giving us appliance options that don’t make us want to sit down and give up.

Modern Design Meets Real LifeTake, for example, the Luma HC12W.  It’s a purely practical appliance—a cool-mist humidifier—that is designed like a work of modern art.  If you’re like me, you remember a genuinely ugly plastic concoction your mom once used when you were sick many decades ago.  Maybe it leaked, maybe it had power cords running everywhere, maybe it looked like something out of a bad space movie—whatever it was, it was NOT stylish.

In any room, you want a few statement accessory pieces that will both draw attention but also fade into the background when you want it to. The Luma HC12W does just this.  Its design mimics that of a tall, modern vase—the same kind you might place near your fireplace or unobtrusively next to a piece of furniture simply for design impact.  With this piece, though, you are getting design impact as well as fabulous function.  The organic lines of the piece make it timeless and its simple assembly and use (with a remote!) make it even more attractive from an ease-of-use standpoint.

Compare the Luma’s streamlined design to the other similar appliances out there.

Certainly, humidifiers have moved forward from those bad 80s memories, but not much.  Now, they may look like a giant teardrop or a big water container.  Maybe it has a fun, bold color—but it still looks like exactly what it is, and it certainly doesn’t look like a purposeful decorating choice.  It looks like something you’d want to put under a table and hide—which sort of defeats the purpose of a humidifier, doesn’t it? With the Luma Comfort line of products, there’s no need to hide and no need to worry about trying to find a special spot (aka hiding place) for it.  Showcase it—and make your life a lot easier as you design your room.

Creating Your Dream House Yourself

If you’re not hiring a designer, then more than likely you, like most people, are doing the heavy lifting (metaphorically and literally) yourself.  What does that mean? You’re rolling up your sleeves and painting, reupholstering furniture, and DIYing your way to the room and house of your dreams.

Let me help a bit, with a few painting tips and strategies that will hopefully save you time AND money!

When you paint:

  • Put tinfoil on your paint tray.  When you are finished, just pull off the tinfoil and uncover a paint-free tray that can be reused again and again.
  • Invest in a quality painter’s tape. Especially if you are tackling something more complicated than standard single color coat, you’ll need a tape that won’t allow bleeding.  Inexpensive is not always the best option.
  • Buy some vinegar.  Did you know that a 50-50 combo of vinegar and warm water can dissolve more paint from your brushes than other options? Soak for about 30 minutes and then rinse.  You might be surprised!
  • Roll with imperfection.  No, you don’t want drips and drops all over your house or wall, but if you are painting stripes, you’re not Modern Design Meets Real Lifegoing to get them perfectly straight.  Most walls and surfaces are not perfectly straight or level, so your work will have to adapt.  Think about the overall impression, especially once furniture returns to the
area.  Embrace less stress—after all, you’re doing this on your own!

Find a way to make your space your own, no matter the challenge.  Find appliances and accessories that, while practical, still fit with your vision of your comfortable, welcoming, beautiful home. You deserve that!

Tips to Boost Productivity in the Workplace

Boosting Productivity in the Workplace

One of the common issues with any workplace is a drop in employee productivity. There are many reasons for this fall in productivity. In some cases, employees are just not motivated enough. However, there are times where the main reason for the inefficient productivity is the office ambiance.

Common Problems That Interfere With Productivity at Work

Most times, managers feel employees are not working up to the mark because of a lack of motivation. However, a lack of motivation is not always the reason behind a decrease in productivity. In most cases, the environment of the office is to be blamed for it. Let’s look at a few common problems that cause employees’ productivity to drop:

Lack of Ventilation Ventilation is essential for any workplace. Without proper ventilation the environment gets stuffy and employees may even have trouble breathing. Unfortunately, a lack of ventilation is the most common reason behind a drop in productivity. When the ventilation is not sufficient, the office becomes difficult to breathe in. Most offices are located on high floors and buildings do not have windows that open. This is why it is up to ambient devices and appliances to improve the environment.

Quality of Air The air quality also has a huge effect on employees’ productivity. If the air in the office is not of a good quality, it could cause allergies and diseases amongst employees. When the employees are not fit for working, the productivity will automatically drop.

Excessive Air-Conditioning If ventilation is insufficient, it will cause the environment to become warm and stuffy. However, this is not the only thing that can cause a problem. Most workplaces turn the air-conditioning all the way up. This causes employees to feel cold. The temperature of any workplace should be maintained instead of making it extremely hot or cold. If the body is not operating at its ideal temperature, employees won’t be able to function to their full potential.

Creating a Comfort Zone at Work There are many things an employer can do to make the environment at a workplace comfortable for the employees. These things will keep employees comfortable and motivate them to work properly and the productivity will increase automatically. Let’s look at a few things that can be done to enhance productivity:

Maintaining Temperature of Air Conditioning The first thing that you should be doing to enhance productivity is deciding on a moderate air conditioning temperature. Excessive heat or cold can cause employees to feel uncomfortable. This is why the temperature should be set to a moderate level which is suitable for everyone. Do keep in mind that there are different people working in a single workplace. One must be considerate of everyone because every employee is important for the business.

Comfortable Seats Uncomfortable sets can cause backaches, shoulder aches and a variety of other posture problems. This is why an employer should invest in quality seats that keep the back of any employee comfortable. Once the employees are able to sit comfortably, they will automatically be able to work more.

Working Aids and System Another important tool for workers is the computer and other working aids. If the system employees are working with is not up to date and working properly, they won’t be able to perform. Moreover, substandard working aids also induce stress. This is because employees are expected to produce more work, but the system keeps them from doing so.

Boosting Productivity in the WorkplaceHow to Boost Productivity at Work

There are many aids an employer can use to increase productivity and creativity of employees at work. Let’s look at a few aids that can be used to increase the productivity of employees:

Ambient Lighting

There has been a lot of research conducted on the ideal ambient lighting for work. The results show that creativity is boosted when the lights dim. This is because an individual gets to concentrate on the task at hand when the surroundings are dimmed out. It is not necessary to keep the lights dim, but a dimmer can be attached to the lights. This way the lights can be brightened and dimmed as preferred.

Ambient Sounds

There is no doubt about the fact that music soothes the brain. However, there are certain ambient sounds that help the brain relax as well. Moreover, these sounds are also known to boost productivity. Even songs can be played for this purpose but there is one thing that should be kept in mind. If the music or sounds are played at a high volume, it will cause disturbance. This is why the volume should be kept moderate. The best way to achieve this would be to install small speakers throughout the workplace. This way, the volume will not have to be turned all the way up and everyone can listen to the sounds at a moderate volume. Allowing workers to listen to music with headphones could also be a good option.

Work Space for Employees

There are quite a few workplaces where employees do not have a proper desk to work. This may come as a surprise but work space also affects productivity and creativity significantly. This is why each employee should be given a separate cubicle. This boosts the creativity process and allows employees to think out of the box.

Install Appliances to Improve the Ambiance

There are many appliances available in the market to enhance productivity of employees. These appliances do not have any effect on the productivity directly. However, they improve the ambiance of the office and ultimately enhance productivity. To prevent employees from catching allergies and diseases, it is best to install an air purifier.  It also keeps the bacteria away and prevents employees from catching flu and cold. Another product employees should invest in is evaporative coolers. They are portable and can refresh the surrounding environment in a snap.

Appliances That Can Improve Productivity at Work

Air purifiers clean the surrounding air and make it pure for the employees to breathe. There are many impurities in the air. Installing a purifier can help get rid of this particulate matter

prevent employees from falling ill. One of the best air purifiers you can get is the Luma Comfort AP400W. It is compact and has a variety of modes. It consumes less power so it is economical and durable as well.and

There are certain areas where air conditioning does not do much good. These are the areas that you should outfit with an evaporative cooler. One of the best coolers you can get is the Luma Comfort EC45S. It consumes as much energy as a small light bulb. You will be able to save money and improve the environment of your office.

If you want to improve the productivity of your employees, you have to improve the office ambiance. You can use the abovementioned tips for doing so. Do keep in mind that employees can only work to their full potential when they are comfortable and happy.

How to Help Your Kids Sleep Through the Night

Help Your Kids Sleep Through the Night
Children need proper sleep just as much as adults. In fact, proper sleep is much more important for children. However, there are many factors that contribute to sleep issues in children. But with a little effort, these problems can be eliminated to allow your kids to sleep through the night.

Importance of Proper Sleep for Children

Sleep is one of the most essential methods of rest for children and adults alike. However, children require proper sleep even more than adults do. In fact, children’s brains develop while they are sleeping. Newborn children have irregular sleep patterns because their brains have not yet been calibrated. Eventually, the brain induces sleep in accordance with the level of light.

Children are still developing a sleep cycle that is synced to daylight and nighttime hours. The same way children need to be fed and nurtured, they need to sleep well. In the case of adults, sleep relaxes the brain and relieves stress. Moreover, it restores normal functionality to the body organs.

But in the case of children, sleep does a lot more. Firstly, children grow the most while they are sleeping. So, if you want your child to develop a healthy body, you should ensure that he/she gets proper sleep. Secondly, apart from physical development, sleep is also extremely essential for mental development. However, merely sleeping is not enough.

The sleep should be proper. There are many things that signify healthy sleep. The sleep must be uninterrupted without any disturbances. Moreover, the sleep should be in sync with the natural clock, which is run by the day and night patterns. Children should sleep during the night and stay awake during the day. It will take up to 6 weeks for this sleep cycle to develop in newborns.

How to Improve Your Child’s Sleep Pattern

Most people are concerned that their newborns are not sleeping in sync with the natural sleep cycle. The truth is that newborn children are not in sync with the sleep cycle. This is why they have irregular sleep patterns and should be left as is. Gradually they will develop a proper cycle. This can take about six weeks and should not be forced. However, children’s sleep patterns get disturbed after being developed. There are many reasons for this, including improper sleep and sleeping for too long. But there are certain measures you can take to improve the sleep cycle in children.

Implement Fixed Timings for Bed

The first step to improving the sleep pattern in kids is to implement a bedtime. Make sure you stick to the routine no matter what. In fact, all your daily activities should be planned around the routine of your children. There shouldn’t be other activities scheduled for them after your children’s bedtimes. When it’s time to sleep, it’s time to sleep.

Help Your Kids Sleep Through the NightMake the Sleep Environment Comfortable

Most children are not able to sleep properly because the bedroom is not comfortable. This is why you should make sure that the sleeping environment is comfortable for your kids. First and foremost, the room must be dark. Lights prevent one from falling asleep. Moreover, make sure that the doors and windows are closed to ensure there are no noises inside.

Avoid Food before Bed

You should stop your children from eating right before bedtime. You should also avoid giving them sweets and chocolates before bed. Sugars will only stimulate your child and prevent them from being calm enough to go to bed. Falling asleep on a full stomach can also be uncomfortable. It will keep your little ones awake all night.

Make Sure Children Get Enough Exercise

If you happen to notice that your children are not sleeping properly, you should check their sleep environment. But if that is not the issue, then you should see if your children are getting enough exercise. If not, then you should take them out in the evenings. Once they get enough exercise, they will automatically be tired before bed and will get proper sleep. However, you should make sure that exercise is at least 2 hours before bed. If they exercise too close to their bedtime, that energized feeling will prevent them from sleeping.

How to Keep the Children’s Nursery Comfortable

The arrangement of a child’s bedroom has a huge effect on the sleep. If the bedroom is not comfortable, children will not be able to sleep properly. This is why you should concentrate on keeping the bedroom extremely comfortable and welcoming.

Curtains to Keep Out Light

The first item you should invest in is curtains or blinds. The curtains should be thick enough to keep out light. This is because sunlight during the day will heat up the room and children won’t be able to sleep. The curtains should be drawn during the day if it’s warm outside. Depending on the intensity of the light outside your child’s window, you can draw them at night too.

Air Purifier to Keep the Air Clean

Allergies and infections can also keep children awake all night. To prevent this, you should invest in a good air purifier. This way a child will be safe from allergies during the night and will be able to sleep properly.

Create a Bedroom Theme

This tip does not have anything to do with the actual sleep, but it does make a room more appealing to the child. Discuss theme ideas with your children and incorporate the theme into their bedroom. They will want to spend more time in it this way. Their bedroom should be a place they enjoy. However, there should also be boundaries for when they sleep. Don’t overwhelm the bed with stuffed animals or leave toys within arm’s reach of the bed. These are unnecessary distractions for a child trying to sleep.

Products That Can Help Your Children Sleep Better

There are many impurities in the air around you. These impurities can cause infections in children and give rise to allergies. This is why these allergies and infections should be prevented at all costs. To prevent allergies, you should consider getting a Luma Comfort AP170W air purifier. It will keep the dust and bacteria out of your child’s room. This way your children will remain healthy. For children who suffer from asthma or allergies, this can also alleviate symptoms so that your child can sleep.

Luma Comfort HCW10BChildren also have dry skin problems and often are not too keen on applying lotions or moisturizers. This is why you should invest in the Luma Comfort HCW10B cool and warm mist humidifier. It will help keep your child cool in summers and warm in winters. This is one product that guarantees proper sleep for your kids because it also creates air that is relaxing to your child.

Good sleep is essential to the growth and development of your child because children develop physically and mentally while they are sleeping. Proper sleep is important for your child’s overall health.

May is National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month

Asthma is a chronic disease. When anyone has an asthma attack, the airways become inflamed and an individual can have problems breathing. One also experiences coughing and wheezing during an asthma attack. If the inflamed airways are not treated, an asthma attack could be fatal. There are many reasons why an individual may be suffering from asthma. In most cases, the person has a family history of asthma and allergies. In other cases, one may have been experienced to dust mites and other antigens as a child. Over time, this develops into asthma.

May is the national awareness month for asthma and allergies. This is why efforts must be made in order to create awareness amongst people regarding this disease. Asthma attacks are quite severe but they can be prevented using certain methods. When it comes to asthma, awareness and prevention is the only cure.

Number of People Suffering from Asthma

The number of people suffering from asthma is constantly growing. Back in 2001 only 7% of the American population suffered from asthma. This meant that only 1 in every 14 people had asthma. Even though this number is quite high, this is quite less as compared to the figures today. This number gradually increased to 8% in 2009 which means that 1 in every 12 individuals suffer from asthma. According to recent studies, about 25 million Americans suffered from asthma in 2009 and 20 million in 2001. Out of these 25 million individuals, over 7 million are under the age of 18.

Asthma attacks are usually linked to a trigger. The trigger can be anything, from dust to smoke. Once the attack is triggered, it causes obstruction in the lungs, making it difficult for the individual to breathe.

Common Asthma Triggers

An asthma attack needs a trigger and that is when it constricts the airways. There are many things that can trigger an asthma attack. Let’s look at common asthma triggers:

  • Allergies and Colds: Allergies and colds are not exactly a cause for asthma, but if you have asthma and you develop allergies, you can have an attack the moment you are infected. This is why if you have asthma, you should avoid allergy triggers. Also eat healthy to boost your immune system.
  • Smoke from Cigarettes: In many cases, the trigger for an asthma attack is secondhand cigarette smoke. If you are travelling and see someone smoking, move away. Passive smoking is dangerous as it is and it can also trigger a serious asthma attack.
  • Dust: Dust can also irritate airways and cause asthma attacks. Individuals suffering from asthma should make it a point to stay away from dust. Avoid cleaning and other activities that involve dealing with dust. If cleaning is inevitable, try to limit your exposure by covering your nose and mouth with a bandana or mask of some kind.

Air Purifiers Can Prevent Allergies

Many types of allergies are transmitted through the air. Even if you keep the windows and doors of your home closed, there are still dust particles that can enter. During spring season, allergies can be triggered by the pollen released by flowers. If ignored, this could result in serious asthma and allergy issues for an individual. Air purifiers are an ideal tool for preventing allergies. It filters the air in your home. This way, if dust and pollen particles manage to get into your home, the air purifier rids the air of them.

While air purifiers are extremely efficient, they are not always the answer. You cannot have an air purifier with you all the time. This is why you should try to avoid exposing yourself to items that trigger these allergies. If you currently have carpeting in your home, you should consider replacing it with a different flooring type. Carpets and rugs typically house dust and pollen particles. When you walk on the carpet, it sends the particles in the air and eventually you breathe them in.

This triggers the allergies. Many people may have pet allergies. If you have a pet, try some of these tips. Many people have managed to control their allergies simply by keeping pets out of their bedroom.

How to Equip a Child’s Room or Nursery to Prevent Allergies and Asthma

Kids are most vulnerable to allergies and asthma. This is because their immune systems are not as strong as adults. This is why children need special attention when it comes to preventing allergies. There are many ways you can prevent allergies in children. The best way is to make their room or nursery allergy proof. Here are a few tips you can use to keep the kids safe from allergies in a nursery or their room:

  • Special Type Of Flooring
New flooring should be considered first when trying to prevent allergies because it is the most common culprit behind allergies. If your floor is such that it can retain dust and pollen particles, it can cause allergies. The most common type of flooring that can cause allergies is carpeting. However, there some types of carpets that do not retain dust. You should check with a manufacturer regarding a carpeting material that does not hold dust. The best flooring option is wood, vinyl or any other type of solid, non-porous flooring.
  • iStock_000003068445SmallFurry Stuffed Toys
Nurseries and children’s rooms often have stuffed toys. These toys work exactly like furry carpets and store dust and pollen. In addition, the stuffing within the toys also stores dust. This is why you should avoid giving stuffed toys to children. Plastic and rubber toys are ideal as they do not retain dust. If your child has a few stuffed animals that are precious to him or her, make sure that they are regularly cleaned to keep dust from accumulating on them.
  • Air Purifier
The best thing you can do to prevent allergies in your children is to install air purifiers. Purifiers clean the air in the room and keep dust particles away. This is a sure shot way to prevent allergies in children.

Fortunately, asthma is not a life-threatening disease in children. Most asthma related deaths involve adults. However, it is a great idea to be aware of the causes and preventive measures of this disease. After all, there is no cure for asthma, so prevention is paramount.

8 Quick Tips about Misting Fans

misting-fansSummertime is meant to be spent outdoors. However, the immense heat can take a toll on your skin. Most people even fall ill if they are exposed to too much heat. This is why one should consider outdoor cooling options. The best way to remain cool while outdoors is to use a misting fan. You can install a misting fan near your pool or on the deck. It will help you stay cool during the summer.

1. Use Misting Fans Anywhere

Misting fans a great option for keeping a particular area cool. These fans actually spray mist along with distributing air and keeping the area cool. Misting fans can provide cooling in every area. In fact, it is a better option than air conditioning systems. Air conditioning systems require a closed space to provide substantial cooling. They cannot cool outdoor areas. Misting fans work in a different fashion and therefore prove more effective in outdoor areas. You can use a misting fan indoors as well. Depending on your preference, you can get portable or stationary misting fans. This allows you to use a misting fan almost anywhere. The Luma Comfort MF26B even comes mounted on a cart so that you can wheel your cooling mist anywhere it’s needed.

Misting fans use water to keep an area cool. This is why you should exercise certain precautions to ensure your safety and the unit’s proper functionality. The first and foremost precaution you should take is to keep the fan away from electricity. Since it sprays mist, it should not be kept close to electrical circuits. Misting fans may cause wires and circuitry to build up moisture which could lead to a short circuit. This can cause an electrical fire. Moreover, you should keep any items that are sensitive to water away from misting fans. For instance, if you have wooden furniture or other items that can be damaged by water, be sure to keep them at a distance.

3. Use Proper Spray Nozzles for the Best Cooling Effect

In essence, a misting fan works seamlessly to cool an area in any sort of an environment. However, there is a common misconception that it does not work well in humid areas. Misting fans create a mist. This gave rise to the idea that it will only make a humid environment more unpleasant by adding the mist. Fortunately, this is not the case. The only time a misting fan will make an environment unpleasant and humid is if the nozzles are not in working order. Otherwise, misting fans work best in areas where there is humidity. Since it is a cooling device, it is meant to be used in warm climates.

4. Maintain Your Misting Fan Properly

Another common misconception regarding misting fans is that they make everything near them wet. This is true to a certain extent, but only if it is used improperly. When the tiny water droplets are sprayed into the air, they cool off the air and then evaporate. However, misting fans are not supposed to cause a water buildup in the surroundings.

Water accumulation is usually caused when these fans are used indoors. While it is safe to use these fans indoors, you have to provide a proper ventilation source. If there is no ventilation available, there is a chance that the water will accumulate somewhere. But this is not because the misting fans do not work properly. It’s simply because the water drops don’t get the chance to evaporate.

Another reason why misting fans may cause moisture buildup is because the right nozzles have not been used. Always use manufacturer specified parts when maintaining fans. This will ensure proper functionality and prevent problems such as moisture buildup.

5. Make Sure the Area is Well Ventilated When Using the Fan

Misting fans can be used in any environment. However, you have to make sure that the area is well ventilated. If not, the misting fan could cause water buildup on objects near it. Moreover, you should not keep misting fans in areas with heavy foot traffic. Instead a misting fan should be kept in a corner where no one can touch it. If a misting fan is kept near people, someone could end up bumping into it. This can be a big problem as certain misting fans are balanced on top of a water tank. Should the water spill onto the electrical components, it could cause a short circuit. The fan could also end up being damaged in the process.

6. Keep Yourself Cool without Getting Wet

Many people believe misting fans make people wet. They believe that misting fans spray water on people and make them wet to stay cool. However, misting fans work quite differently. In fact, they do not make the surroundings wet. The tiny water droplets that are sprayed into the air cool down the surrounding air. Once the air is cooled the droplets evaporate. This is because the water droplets are immensely small. They do not have the density to make anyone wet. There is a chance of this happening, but only if the fan is malfunctioning. There are certain misting fans that are built with inferior quality materials. The nozzles used in these fans cause people and surroundings to get wet.

7. Consider the Best Water Supply Option

There are many different types of misting fans available in the market nowadays. Some are portable, while others need to be hooked to a water supply. For most portable models, there is a built-in water reservoir in the misting fan itself. You simply need to fill it with water and use it. On the other hand, there are some misting fans that require a large water tank or supply. However, this depends purely on the type of misting fan you choose. If you are at a distance from a water source, you should consider using a misting fan with a tank. You will need to refill the tank once the water runs out.

Healing Children Back to Their Barbaric Ways

I used to babysit for my uncle’s kids, and I always loved it when they were sick. One: because I finally had peace and quiet since they slept all day, and two: I didn’t have to do much work. They weren’t wildly running around, and their room didn’t look like a tornado destroyed it. However, the down side of them being sick is that they don’t care what they touch. They’re rubbing their nose and mouth touching furniture, door knobs, food, ME…and I would definitely settle for their super craziness rather than getting sick myself. So I opted to buy a humidifier to expedite their recovery process.

My uncle is pretty adamant about giving his children any type of medicine because he feels it may not be safe. Thanks to me, his children’s symptoms are at ease without any help. With a humidifier, I am reassured knowing that the children are taking in fresh air. The moisture helps them easily breathe, cough, and swallow by loosening the mucus in their nose and throat from their cold. They’re more comfortable and able to rest so they can be back to their barbaric ways in a couple of days.

One reason a child might get sick is because of a dry nasal passage. Their skin is also usually dry, and it can be more prone to irritation and wounds. It’s important to have a humidifier that keeps a child’s skin wet and warm at all times, especially after a bath. Moisturizing the air is key to prevent disease and to make their skin feel like soft, smooth butter!

The first time I saw a humidifier I thought it was a really weird-looking contraption. They’re mostly ugly, weirdly shaped, and I would totally be embarrassed if my friends saw it in my room. But, after my impeccable research, I learned that they come in different designs that better suit my fabulous taste (and I guess my uncle’s taste too). The kids are also big believers on saving the planet, so of course I had to invest in a humidifier that was energy efficient or else they wouldn’t let me bring inside the house. I bought the Luma Comfort Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier. It’s design is sleek, modern, sophisticated, and very different. It can absolutely fit into any type of room decor!

When I turned it on, I heard nothing! No wonder the kids can sleep with this thing on all day. But after realizing how beneficial it is for children, I vowed that I would always have it on hand when necessary.

The Do’s & Don’ts of Humidifiers

Looking for a tip or two on how to operate humidifiers? You’ve probably noticed the thousands of results when searching through Google. It seems like everyone is an expert when it comes to humidifiers, or are they? Here is some advice coming from a bona fide expert at Luma Comfort!

DO be lazy

Using distilled water in a humidifier reduces the amount of time to clean it. Great for lazy people like myself who hate moving their bodies!

DON’T get chlamydia and die

Do you know what happens when a bunch of people are sick in the same house? NOTHING. No one cleans, no one eats the leftover pizza in the fridge, and everything else is left to rot. This is what happens when you don’t own a humidifier and your body is slow to recover.

DO disburse drugs

I’m not talking about your illegal substances. I’m talking Tylenol, Nyquil, and Robitussin, that can aid the humidifier in getting you back to your healthy self.

DON’T trust people who don’t wear shoes

Because most likely they have dry, rough skin and static buildup. All can be prevented from the moist air of a humidifier, but I also recommend using body lotion, chapstick, and putting on leather shoes.

DO save those pretty pennies

Humidifiers can be quite expensive. Start saving that loose change found trying to escape the washing machine. You’ll be rich in no time.

DON’T let those white dust fairies run wild!

That was the whole purpose of buying a humidifier – to get rid of germs! They’re everywhere, they’re annoying, and they can cause lung damage in children. Yikes!

DO take pride in work you’re not doing

Humidifiers do all the work for you, while you take all the credit. Maintain your health, stay warm, and enjoy the moisture a humidifier brings to your home.

DON’T wake up a sour puss

Leave the humidifier running all all night. It’s totally safe, but make sure you have plenty of water so it doesn’t stop working.

DO be affectionate

Take care of your humidifier and it will take care of you.

DON’T take it with you on a hike

I know it’s great, durable, and the design makes you look stylish, but are you serious? How big do your muscles really need to be?

DO smile

Quit letting yourself suffer more than you already are. Whether you have a cold, allergy, or asthma, the humidifier works to ease those symptoms.

DON’T become an alcoholic

You can have tons of sober fun with a humidifier. They’re great company. But if you decide to, which I’m not condoning because then I would be an accessory to crime, I really recommend sipping on some JD Honey.

DO buy a humidifier from Luma Comfort

They last long, produce outstanding results, and carry more features than most brands. Kapeesh? Kapeesh!

DON’T buy a humidifier of lesser quality

For example, a humidifier from Winix. False hope. How do I know? Because I bought one and returned it within a week.

It’s Time For Luma Comfort to Care for the Wildlife

Luma Comfort is thrilled to give back and save an important species of our entire ecosystem – BATS! We believe they’re misunderstood, and we could not pass up the opportunity to aid Second Chances Wildlife. Second Chances provides rehabilitation and safe release of injured, displaced, or orphaned animal. Since bats have a very specific living condition, we were more than willing to offer a few humidifiers in order to nurse them back to perfect health.

Founded in 2009, Second Chances shelters and cares for injured or orphaned wildlife in the wonderful Louisville, Kentucky. Each animal is fed, taught survival skills, and placed in a pre-release enclosure to simulate their own individual habitat. They are dewormed and vaccinated for healthier populations in the wild, which also decreases the risk of pets and humans receiving wildlife diseases. The company specializes in opossums, but accepts other mammal species including raccoons, skunks, squirrels, bats, and more!

One species that requires a lot of attention are bats. Bats are extremely beneficial to our ecosystem for several reasons. They eat insects, pollinate fruits and nuts we eat everyday, and disburse seeds throughout the rainforest for future growth. Their guano (poop) is also the best type of fertilizer that farmers truly appreciate! However, nurturing a bat back to health is very difficult since their environment requires humidity. This is something that is very difficult to produce at Second Chances, and the bats will dehydrate without it.

Luma Comfort is donating FOUR HCW10B Cool and Warm Mist Humidifiers to Second Chances Wildlife in order to support and comfort the bats currently sheltered. The HCW10B protects against dry air by providing cool and warm mist that covers up to 538 square feet. The bats will enjoy the micro fine mist as Second Chances is able to control the humidity with the built-in hygrometer. The tank operates up to 40 hours with a demineralization cartridge preventing lime scale and mineral buildup. Volunteers will be able to remove and clean the water tank for hassle-free work, and most importantly, the silent operation will not disturb the habitat.

We are excited to watch the healing and growth of these bats, and we can’t wait to receive the many updates on how well they’re doing!
