Does your home have hard water? Maybe you’ve noticed some white residue on your faucets or white spots on your plates and pans after you wash them. Eighty-five percent of American homes have hard water, and if you’ve seen these, then odds are your home is one of them.
Hard water is safe to drink. In fact, it even has some mild health benefits, supplying the body with calcium and magnesium and slightly lowering the risk of cardiovascular disease. However, in your humidifier, it can cause problems – creating dust and destroying your machine.
Hard Water and Scale
When hard water is broken up into mist, the minerals suspended in it are released into the atmosphere, creating “scale.” Scale is a coating of hardened minerals that form on surfaces exposed to hard water and hard water precipitation. It’s the white crust that forms on your faucets and your dishes. When it comes out of your humidifier, it leaves an ugly white powder over your furniture.
It’s also a problem inside your humidifier. Scale buildup can interfere with the motor and keep it from working, especially if you have an ultrasonic humidifier like the Luma HC12W Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier, the Luma Comfort HC12B Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier, and the HCW10B Cool & Warm Mist Humidifier. The hard water particles can build up around the ultrasonic plate and stop it from vibrating, preventing your humidifier from releasing any mist whatsoever.
Preventing these problems is the reason why Luma humidifiers are sold with built-in demineralization cartridges. Demineralization cartridges act as a filter, trapping minerals in the water and preventing them from being released into the air, improving the quality of the mist they release and extending the lifespan of your device. Every Luma Comfort humidifier – the Luma HC12W Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier, the Luma Comfort HC12B Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier, and the HCW10B Cool & Warm Mist Humidifier –comes with a demineralization cartridge that filters your water for minerals.
Getting the Most from Your Demineralization Cartridge
Demineralization cartridges last about a year, depending on where you live and how often you use your humidifier. They fail because they eventually absorb too many mineral particles become clogged. There’s no way to prevent it, but with regular maintenance, you can delay it. Once a month, remove your demineralization cartridge and soak it for 15-20 minutes in a salt water solution or a 50/50 solution of water and vinegar. This breaks up the mineral deposits in your cartridge and extends its lifespan.
